SPRING CLEANING MY SMALL KITCHEN

Now that I am seriously self isolating I have decided it's time to do some spring cleaning. What better place to start than my kitchen.

First of all I got my new refrigerator a couple of weeks ago. It isn't a fancy refrigerator with a lot of bells and whistles. It's a basic GE  refrigerator, and I love it. I don't know just how old the one that was here before was, but it was pretty old. This one is clean and shiny and I can see where everything is. No more lost food.

Tessa gifted me with a new piece of artwork to Christen it. Makes me happy whenever I see it.

The first thing I did was clean out the cupboard under my sink. Found things I forgot were there. Like this pretty pot. Perfect for the bedroom.

After I finished cleaning out cupboards. I moved on to thoroughly cleaning counters and everything on them.

My counter space is very limited, and it doesn't help that I don't have a double sink,

and since I don't have a dishwasher my wooden drainer takes up a lot of space.

My next task was to remove the burners from my stove, lift up the stove top and clean everything really good.

Unfortunately I forgot that I no longer have a self cleaning oven and since I don't have oven cleaner that is something I will have to take care of later.

Finished up with mopping the floor and I was done.

I love a shiny clean kitchen. Now on to the rest of the apartment.

THE OLD PINE CUPBOARD

When I woke up this morning I once again heard the rain beating against my bedroom window. The rain in Atlanta is out of hand. As of Wednesday night we were already 10" above normal and it rained all day Thursday. Enough already!!

I was so ready for sunny spring days that I began to pull apart my small dining room decor. I realized though that it was going to take me more than one day to figure out what I wanted to do, so I decided to throw open the doors of my old pine cover and give you a look inside.

I have had this cupboard for about 35 years and have almost always had the doors open. The small apartment I live in now just doesn't have room for me to do that, so they have remained closed except for dusting or when I need something out of there.

I do miss having them open because I love to look at my treasures, and I guess when it is only me here and no one needs to sit in the chair that sits beside it I could do that. We'll see.

I have so many lovely things. Treasures from my grandmother,

(My Grandmother's silver ladle)

(Her blue glass and silver set)

the Royal Doulton china that my father gave to my mother on one of their anniversaries many years ago,

some of my white ironstone pieces, and glassware.

Thank goodness for the bottom of the cupboard, that has wooden doors, because it provides overflowing space for other pieces that I rotate in and out.

Many older women seem horrified that I still have so much, and although I have given many things to my daughters, I still love the things I have.

Seeing them brings me comfort, and in these turbulent times comfort is a good thing.

FEELING BUGGY

I think I may have a bit of a bug. I know there a lot of viruses going around now. My grandchildren have had a stomach virus and my youngest daughter is sick. Also, I have heard the woman in the apartment next to me coughing. I don't usually hear much noise from my neighbors so she must have been coughing pretty loudly.

I'm feeling a bit off color, as my mother used to say. Not sick enough to require staying in bed, but enough that I know to slow down. I have a lot planned for this week so I spent the weekend taking it easy at home.

I'd hate to miss my upcoming dentist appointment. NOT!!!

There is something else that was bugging me. Last week I found a roach in my kitchen. I'm sorry did it see a welcome mat with its name on it? I think not.

I immediately freaked out and called the management. Fortunately they had the exterminator here the next day. I don't do roaches.

I remember my daughter telling me about her escapades with flying roaches in her house when she moved to Atlanta. I laughed hysterically because I didn't live where there were flying roaches.

I hope that doesn't come back to bite me, because I might be forced to move to a climate where no flying roaches could survive.

So far I haven't seen anymore roaches since that one had the nerve to run out in front of me. I'm hoping they have moved on to roach heaven.

I guess in a few days I will be spring cleaning my kitchen. Maybe I could do that instead of going to the dentist.

STAYING AT HOME TIME

I think I really did way too much walking on my knee last week and I have been paying for it.

I just had so much I needed to do, plus I did some things I probably should have put on hold. It's just hard for me to stay put.

Yes I walked around the plant place

Well, by Friday my knee was really hurting and I could barely walk. So I have been forced to stay home and rest.

I spent some time yesterday morning researching orthopedic surgeons in the Atlanta area as I don't have one yet. I was able to find the one who has the best reviews and if I need to go have my knee examined I will give his office a call. He is a provider on my insurance thank goodness.

The last time I hurt my knee my surgeon in Kentucky sent me to physical therapy and that may be what I need again.

Speaking of new doctors, I had my yearly skin cancer scan on Wednesday. I had a squamous cell carcinoma four or five years ago so I am diligent about being checked. All clear and I liked the nurse practitioner who examined me.

Thursday I had my annual eye exam. Loved the doctor, who my daughter recommended.. My vision is still 20/20. She said she thought I had the healthiest eyes of the day. I feel really blessed to still have such good vision at almost age 69. (Yes I tell my age. I am not ashamed of it. Age is just a number.)

The eye exam was at Emory, and it was one of the places I had to walk far. I think that was the final straw for my poor hurting knee.

Haven't left my apartment since Thursday to even check my mail. Tomorrow I have to go downstairs to print out some shipping labels for things I have sold this weekend, but I don't have anything I have to do this next week other than drop those packages at the post office and maybe pick up a few things at the grocery.

It is going to be a cold week so I will be happy to be in my cozy apartment.

SNAPPING BEANS AND FAMILY

Last night my two daughters and my oldest granddaughter, Sidney, came over and had dinner with me.

Sidney brought me a housewarming gift. It's a sweet little philodendron. She knew just what I would like.

As I was planning to cook my eggplant tomato casserole I thought about how nice it would be to share it with them. For so many years I wasn't able to cook for them, but now that I am finally nearby I can have that family time I looked so forward to.

Since my son in law and grandson are camping out west, and Tessa is with her other grandparents while she goes to day camp, I thought it would be the perfect time for a girl's visit.

It was a simple dinner of casserole and fresh green beans with tomatoes and onions, and as I sat and snapped the green beans I thought back to sitting on the porch with my grandmother snapping beans and chatting.

My mom was in the kitchen baking a cake for the strawberry shortcake my father would later concoct, and I can still remember the cadence of my grandmother's southern drawl as a backdrop to the sound of the snapping beans.

My grandparents and parents are all gone now and the home I grew up in burned down several years ago, but the memories will always be there.

After dinner, last night, the four of us sat and talked about silly things we had done in the past. We were making new memories. Ones that I hope Sidney will carry with her. As we talked, I felt the past, the present, and the future all coming together in wonderful harmony. It's how life should be.

SMALL KITCHEN WALL SPACE

My kitchen is not huge, but the kitchen in the apartment that I am moving to is definitely smaller and I won't have room for my vintage kitchen cart like I have now.

(You can see that I took the photo as is. I'm packing and didn't have the energy to pretty it up for a photo.)

I don't need a huge kitchen. After all there is only one of me and I am not doing much in the way of major cooking or baking.

Here are a couple of quick shots of the kitchen I will have in Georgia.

As you can see it is a galley style kitchen.

Although I don't do a lot of fancy cooking, I do need storage for all my kitchen gadgets and as there is not a lot of counter space I would like to keep things put away as much as possible.

One idea is to utilize the wall at the end of the kitchen as vertical space. I found so many ideas on Pinterest that I meant to post this yesterday but suddenly found I was into the next day. I think I went into a Pinterest trance.

There were of course lots of Ikea ideas. They really do have some great options, and as I will be close to one in Atlanta I can shop to my heart's content.

I love all of the different configurations and they hopefully wouldn't break the bank.

I have always liked the idea of pegboard in the kitchen. This really makes great use of the space.

This is clever and cute. The homeowner has taken bed slats and turned them into a wall unit to hang kitchen gadgets.

I am getting a lot of great ideas, but I will have to wait until I finally move in order to make a decision.

In the meantime I'll be busy pinning ideas to my boards on Pinterest.

LIVING SIMPLE IN A NEW YEAR

Happy New Year everyone. I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season.

I really enjoyed being with my family. The grand kids are perfect and it was wonderful to spend time with my daughters.

As much as I love the holidays, I am always happy when the new year starts. It feels like there is a clean slate to write on, and I have been thinking about what I want to write on that slate this year.

I don't make resolutions, but I do try and set some goals for myself.

I am working on what those goals are, but I know from experience that life will intervene and goals have to be flexible.

One thing that I want to focus more on is living a simpler life even in this complex world that we live in.

I want my small apartment to be a haven from all of the complexities of the outside world. I want to be able to close my door and know that I can choose to turn off and tune out if I want.

Now I will have to decide how to do that amidst the activist work that I am doing.

For me just thinking about focusing on a simpler life brings about a sense of peace.

Do you have plans for this new year?

remember this day

Remember this day.

It's the day you got out of bed.

It's the day you opened the front door and smelled the sweet smells of life.

It's the day you stretched your arms out and said hello world I'm here.

It's the day you spent loving yourself.

It's the day you shared that love with everyone you met so that it was reflected back onto yourself.

It's a day that can go on forever.

Remember this day.
