SPEAK TO YOURSELF WITH LOVE

Sometimes I find myself having a crisis of faith in myself.

I find myself berating myself for things I perceive that I have been doing wrong, and if I allow this negative talk to go on, I find confidence in myself spiraling downward.

The negative speak we hear from others can affect our self-confidence, but when we internalize these words and then turn around and speak to ourselves with the same or even worse words, it can be devastating.

So how should we be speaking to ourselves?

speak to yourself with love

I was the hand-me-down child in my family and was spoken to in that manner into my adult life.

I allowed that to seep into my soul and it is how I learned to speak to myself.

It became my belief system, and the way I spoke to myself in the past became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

roses in a metal basket

There came a time in my life when I realized that I wouldn't speak to someone I love the way I had been speaking to myself, and shouldn't I love myself first?

We all have failures and hopefully, we learn from those failures.

I have vowed to brush myself off and to treat myself more gently.

I have vowed to speak to myself the way I would speak to someone I love.

If I find myself speaking in less than a loving way I will give myself encouragement.

I will start fresh.

The wonderful thing is starting fresh is not finite. We can start over as many times as we need.

I hope you will speak with love to yourself today and every day.

FINDING HOPE

"The power of hope upon human exertion and happiness

is wonderful."
                                   Abraham Lincoln

Hope can be a difficult thing to find in trying times.

We are living in a complicated world.

It is a world where we are faced with personal as well as global uncertainties.

flowers and butterfly

There are many days, especially over this past year when I have had to dig very deep to find hope, but I know that hope is my source of strength.

Hope sustains me when I feel that things around me are falling apart.

Meditation and prayer give me the strength to wrap myself in a cloak of hope, to awake to the power of hope that is within me always.

"Hope is being able to see that there is light
despite all of the darkness."
                                                 Desmond Tutu

Even those who are suffering the most unimaginable pain and suffering can find hope.

It seems to arise from the depths of the darkness and bring them back into the light.

Even on the days that I struggle the most, I remind myself of the struggles of others.

wildflowers and woods

The future may look frightening, but hope is like the beautiful wildflowers that grow along the edge of dark woods.

The beauty will sustain us through the darkness. The beauty will still be there when we emerge on the other side.

On a side note, Blogger has decided to not forward your comments to me and so I have missed some.

Until it gets straightened out I will answer them here.

LEAVES OF GOLD

I love the cooler mornings we are having.

Yesterday it was in the sixties, and when I went outside it felt wonderful.

It is the perfect temperature for walking or just hanging out with a cup of tea.

leaves turning gold

As I looked up at the clear blue sky I noticed that the upper levels of the trees were turning gold.

It brought back a memory of a book I had in the 1970s called Leaves Of Gold.

Somehow over the years that book disappeared, but I remember the beautiful poems, prose, prayers, and sayings that were in the book.

leaves of gold book

Apparently the book can still be purchased.

Seeing the first gold leaves of autumn also reminds me of a poem by Robert Frost.

Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost

Gold is fleeting.

But we must enjoy it in the moment.

For the leaves will turn gold and then they will fall away.

BEDROOM WALL DECOR

 Simple Pleasures #

For me, nothing defines a space more than what you hang on your walls.

Recently I shared how I updated the hanging shelf in my bedroom.

Since then I have been adding to the other wall spaces in my bedroom.

vintage wall art

(My bedroom is very dark so I apologize for the quality of these photos.)

Today I thought I would share more of that wall.

This is the space above my bed.

In the center is a signed original oil painting that I purchased several years ago from an estate sale in Kentucky.

It is based on an oil painting titled "Whistling Boy" by Duveneck.

I believe that it may have been done by one of his students.

I paid $10 for it and it is definitely one of my best purchases.

It is surrounded by four framed vintage butterfly prints that belonged to my mom.

Since people often ask me how I have decorated my home on a budget I plan to share more of my finds in the near future.

As we move into fall we look forward to the coziness of a new season.

Gluten-Free Blueberry Banana Muffins

Hot tea and muffins are definitely favorites of mine when cooler weather rolls around.

Whether first thing in the morning or mid-afternoon they are a perfect combination.

I am always looking for new ways to use my overly ripe bananas and these muffins are a very tasty way to do just that.

These muffins contain very little fat, so they don't even have to be a guilty pleasure.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GRANDMOTHERS

 Simple Pleasures #55

There was a time when it was the norm for extended families to live together.

When grandparents were an integral part of a family's day-to-day living.

It was a time when an older generation was deemed to be a source for teaching and sharing life experiences with younger members of a family.

Although those days for the most part have ended, it doesn't mean that grandparents and especially grandmothers are no longer needed in the raising of children?

"Some scientists think women evolved to live way past their childbearing years so that in middle age, unencumbered by babies of their own, they can make sure their daughters’ kids thrive.
These scientists posit that back in the days before farming, young mothers were better able to keep their kids alive when their own mothers were around to help forage—an advantage that has been dubbed the “grandmother effect.” (source unknown)

As most of us are no longer out foraging, what is our purpose now?
Are we meant to take cruises where we play shuffleboard or hang out in bingo parlors?
The importance of grandmothers has ebbed and flowed over time.
Maybe grandmothers were less important in the mid twentieth century when most mothers stayed at home, but the importance of grandmothers may be on the upswing once again.

I know that I love spending time with my grandchildren and passing on the things that I learned from my own grandmothers.
My hypothesis is that grandmothers are pretty darned important.
What do you think?

Apple Cranberry Chicken Salad

I was sitting here a couple of days ago thinking about how tired I am of my lunch choices when I came across a recipe for apple cranberry chicken salad.

I love chicken salad and this is the perfect time of the year to add fresh crispy apples and cranberries.

I also love grapes in my chicken salad so I am tossing a few into the mix and serving it up on some gluten-free tortillas.

This is a simple way to use up some leftover chicken.

Invite some girlfriends over and enjoy it on the deck with a glass of white wine or some iced tea on a late summer or early fall day.

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT

I just have to come right out and say that...

sometimes my attitude stinks

When I wake up each morning I try to start my day by feeling gratitude.

I say thank you for something and how grateful I am to be alive for another day.

But then, some days my attitude takes a huge detour.

road closed

It's as if someone put up a big road closed sign in my mind and I can't get around it.

Why is that?

I just feel a huge pout coming on.

It's the why me syndrome.

Why are my sales so low?

Why am I  living in this very small apartment?

Why can't I afford a new car, a recliner, a new computer?

WHY? WHY? WHY?

sad dog

Well, I think you get the point.

We are all human and we all have our bad days, but I really want to do better and have fewer of those days.

I need to work on it.

Yes, I need an attitude adjustment because I believe that when you change your attitude you change your life.

Because I know that into each life a little rain will fall.

rain gear

My five-part plan.

1) It's my life and I get to choose how it goes. I may not be able to control the external things that are happening around me, but I can choose how I react to them.

2) No one knows more about me than I do. So no matter what anyone else thinks I should do I know what is best for me. After all, I am an expert on myself.

3) I will remain calm in the face of adversity. This is a hard one for me at times because I just want to shout at life and say "how dare you treat me like that". That's when I will go back to #1

4) I will choose love. Not only love for others but love for myself. I will choose to love my present moment, knowing that I have everything I need at this moment. I will focus on what I have instead of what I lack because then I will always have enough.

5) I will remember that I am on a wonderful journey. It's the journey called life.

PLANNING FOR FALL

 Simple Pleasures #54

Is it really September already?

How did that happen?

Even though we will be having hot weather here in Georgia for a while and even though I don't really like cold weather I have been turning my attention to fall.

I want to give my apartment a cozy feel so I started on my bedroom by updating my wall shelf.

Next week I will share some of the other things I added to my gallery wall in the bedroom.

I spend most of my time in my apartment these days and so I want it to be extra cozy.

I've been spending time online looking for ideas to add fall touches without breaking the bank.

Yesterday when I went out to run errands it was 92 degrees, but I actually saw a few red leaves.

I think the trees are sick of the blistering heat.

fall leaves

Some things I love about fall are the beautiful leaves, fresh crunchy apples, and pumpkins.

Gluten-Free Apple Cake

This gluten-free apple sharlotka cake is a great alternative to apple pie and only requires five ingredients.

I sure do miss those apple trees that were in my backyard when I was growing up, but these days I am happy to let someone else do the apple picking.

I'm all for an easy peasy recipe and especially one that is this tasty.

It's also perfect for the dairy free members of your family, but for me I say pass a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a topping please.

What I am Reading And Watching

I am currently reading War At Home an older series of books by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles.

I am reading book number two but I definitely suggest starting with book one in the series.

Goodbye Piccadilly a novel

"Goodbye Piccadilly is the first book in theWar at Homeseries by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, author of the much-loved Morland Dynasty novels. Set against the real events of 1914, Goodbye Piccadilly is extraordinary in scope and imagination and is a compelling introduction to the Hunter family."

I have been watching a lot of TV series on MHZ, which is a streaming channel of foreign tv shows through Amazon.

All of the shows are subtitled.

This week I watched a very funny French show called Make Love Not Kids.

make love not kids french tv

From The Producers:

Picture three very different families: Odile & Alexandre, living a quiet life with their three kids; Anissa with her new husband Serge and Clément as the ex-husband, with their ups and downs. Meï and Chang who just arrived from Beijing as political refugees. On the surface they have nothing in common until their kids befriend each other at school. Soon, the adults, who all share the same desire to be loving parents, regardless of life’s unexpected twists can now turn to each other with a sense of humour.  Hard blows, family secrets, an unexpected pregnancy, a coming-out…

A family comedy about real life that everyone will enjoy! I did.
