LIFE AND WHAT I'M READING

Saturday, March 20, 2021

This last week or so has been somewhat of a doozy. It began 10 days ago when I went in to have the first half of a deep cleaning at the dentist. My periodontal health had declined during the last year due to Covid.

It wasn't the worst thing I have ever had done, but it was later that night that the problem began. Apparently the cleaning had injured my trigeminal nerve, and I experienced the worst pain I have ever had in my life, when I touched a spot on my face. I continued to have several episodes over the next few days and was considering knocking myself out with a hammer.

That same day I had to take my daughter to be admitted to the hospital. If you are a reader of my blog you know that she has a primary immune disease and basically has been homebound for the last year. Apparently she had gotten a fungus infection in her lung and needed to be in hospital for the treatment.

They took every precaution to keep her from contracting Covid, but as I watched them wheel her away I felt helpless and terrified.

The next five days were pretty much of a nightmare as I dealt with my pain, the worry for Katy, and the fact that her insurance company was refusing to pay the $16,000 for the medication she has to take for the next three months.

Thank goodness for her team at Emory who made countless phone calls and persuaded the drug company to provide the life saving medication to her for free.

I felt like dancing

Tuesday was everything in reverse. I went to the dentist to have the second half of my treatment, which made my pain worse. It was triggered by brushing my teeth and blowing my nose. I don't even want to think of the hundreds of dollars I had to pay, even with dental insurance, to be put in pain.

I have now resolved to use every dental related item known to womankind to insure I never have to go through that ordeal again.

Some dental supplies I have purchased are some nifty interdental brushes (HERE), more dental floss (HERE), which is overflowing my cabinet, and a new water flosser (HERE). I now spend most of my time hovering over the bathroom sink.

Fortunately my pain seems to be lessening and I am hoping that it is just temporary.

After the dentist I picked Katy up from the hospital and took her home, where she is once again safe from Covid, if not fungal infections.

Now on to what I am reading. I love British mysteries and have read all of the Detective Inspector Slider mysteries by Cynthia Harrod Eagles.

Did the victim's dumped girlfriend, with blood on her hands, kill him? Is the case as clear cut as it seems? Well of course not. What would be the fun in that?

If you are a fan of British mysteries and have never read this series, you can find it (HERE). She also writes other great books, which you might want to look into.

If you are already a reader of her books you definitely will want to read this latest book "Cruel as The Grave" (HERE)

I am looking forward to a quiet weekend of reading, tending to my houseplants, and welcoming the official start of spring.

  1. I surely know that pain, so I hope yours is temporary. Mine comes from a knock to my head back in 1998, and crops up from time to time. But not from touching my face. Mine is more random.

  2. I'm going to look for those books. I've been in a reading slump lately. I hate to hear about your pain. I had the deep cleaning a few years ago and said NEVER AGAIN! I bought an electric toothbrush a couple of weeks ago after getting my teeth cleaned. I love it now and hope it helps me with gum health! Take care! Praying for your daughter too!

  3. So sorry you had to go through these ordeals. Pain in your mouth is horrible.

I can't imagine how you felt about Katy. Thank goodness she's safe and home.

I'll keep you all in my thoughts.

  4. OMG Laura you have been through a lot. I am glad your mouth is feeling better and Katy is home and doing better. It is horrible that drugs that can help people have to cost that much. The books sounds like a good read. Have a great weekend. xoxo

  5. Oh my gosh, how terrible with the ordeal at the dentist and then that awful pain and on top of it, your daughter having to be in the hospital. I have dental phobia but I go every six months for my cleaning because I am prone to cavities and have receding gums/periodontal disease. The pockets on my bottom front teeth are so deep that I have to be numbed just to have a cleaning. And my next appt is this Monday. I already have anxiety about it. And just for the record, I brush and floss twice a day. I use both a water flosser and regular dental floss. But I'm still prone to all these problems.

I hope your daughter is better now with her medication (terrible that the insurance co first wouldn't pay for it!). Have a good weekend!

  6. Omg, this sounds like a nightmare! Did the dentist offer you anything for the pain? Thankfully your daughter is home safe and the medication is paid for.
