TRADITIONS

Friday, December 31, 2021

This post is part of the Simple Pleasures series.

Yesterday continued to be unseasonably warm in Georgia and as I sat in my living room listening to the rain and thunder outside my window I thought about traditions.

We all have traditions in our families. They are things that have been passed down to us with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past.

As I sat alone on Christmas and my birthday this year due to covid in my family I thought about the traditions in my family and how we are losing many of the traditions I love. Traditions that bring me comfort.

I wonder how many traditions will be lost forever.

Laura's Hoppin John Recipe

Don't be shocked that this normally lazy cook is sharing a personal recipe with you.

Here in the south, we welcome the new year with black-eyed peas for good luck.

Although there are many variations of Hoppin John this is my recipe and it is yummy.

olive oil cooking spray

1 can vegetarian black-eyed peas (drained)

1 large green pepper chopped

1 cup chopped onion

brown rice (I use the quick-cooking kind when I am feeling impatient)

shredded cheddar cheese

fresh tomatoes cut into bite size chunks

This will generally feed four people.

cook enough brown rice to serve four people (I generally double what it says on the box) set aside.

saute the onion and green pepper in olive oil until fork tender.

add the black eyed peas and cook until heated through

spoon black eyed pea mixture on top of rice on individual plates.

top with shredded cheese and fresh tomatoes to taste.

Very easy peasy, but extremely tasty

What I'm Reading

I have loved reading Karen White's Tradd Street series and am sad to see it coming to an end, but I am looking forward to sitting down the week and reading the last book in the series.

Return to the house on Tradd Street one last time in this hauntingly spectacular finale to the bestselling series featuring psychic medium Melanie Trenholm.

Wishing you all a happy new year. I hope all your dreams come true in 2022.

  3. I agree... family traditions are so great to carry on. I still try to follow my mom and dad's traditions in many ways. They've been gone 20 years now but I still remember their traditions and how much they meant to me! I've tried to pass those on to my son(s).. one is deceased... but my oldest, who is now 43, still carries on many of my and my mom's traditions, mostly on holidays. He still talks about growing up and going to grandma's house on birthdays and holidays, and I see him carry on with many of them. I'm so glad! It's such an important family connection. xoxo Marilyn

  4. Traditions have certainly changed for our family in these last few years-starting even before Covid reared it's ugly head. I miss the old days sometimes but know that life is all about change and embracing the new as I release the old.
God bless you in 2022, Laura. xo Diana

  5. Hopefully, traditions will be able to resume next year, and that Covid is in the rear-view window. Boy. that Hoppin John recipe sounds good!

  6. My family tradition was to leave the Christmas decorations up till Twelfth Night - and for us overlapping with my father's birthday on the 6th.

Covid in the family here too - but my sister is getting better. Hope yours are all well again!
