NEW FRIENDS AND A CANCELLED APPOINTMENT

Thursday, January 16, 2020

One of the most difficult things about moving to a new city is meeting people, especially as we get older.

I love that my daughters and grandchildren are here, but they are busy with their lives and I only see them a couple of times a month.

Also, I miss having friends. I like having friends who are around my age. Tuesday I went to the first meeting of my new peer group that was set up by TTN, The Transition Network.

There were only three of us there for the first meeting, but we sat and chatted for around two hours. It was nice to get to know them. One of the women was in my water aerobics class, but I hadn't ever really talked to her.

I also found out about a chair yoga class that has been added at the Wellness Center, where I was going to walk the indoor track before my knee sprain. It is now on my calendar for Friday morning.

We also talked about some things we might want to do in the future together.

Yesterday was the dreaded dentist appointment. I arrived on time for the appointment, but after I got there I found out that there was some kind of outage in the area and so I had to reschedule for next week. I hate going to the dentist. Now I have the dubious pleasure of waiting for another week.

I wish I had known before I went to the appointment, but it is what it is.

Today is another PT appointment. Hopefully they are winding down now. My knee is definitely getting much better.

  1. Laura, So glad you are making new friends. I am not a dentist fan either. :( I love my dentist, just don't like having to go to his office. LOL Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie

  2. I usually like to get my teeth cleaned but I'm not looking forward to my next appt with a bunch of extra exams, etc. The chair yoga is really neat and easier than getting down on the floor. Enjoy your day my friend!

  3. Bummer Laura, no one wants to go in the first place and then have to back.

Happy you joined this group and it may get larger.

Have fun at your new class and happy your knee is starting to feel better.

  4. Hi Laura...I know what you mean about making new friends. That experience is one I'm very familiar with since I've had a lot of moves in my life. The last decade, the joined a book club, started doing aqua aerobics, and did activities with grands where other grandmothers hung out. I've made some lovely friendships along the way. Yes, stay active and keep meeting new people. I love your "rose" dish. I love anything old-fashioned. Susan

  5. I think it is important to have 'real' friends. I have a lot of on-line friends and old friends that live a distance away but no 'girlfriends' that are local to do things with anymore. Kind of sad. I am hoping once we get moved to join a book club and/or find a group that I feel comfortable joining. Good luck-hope you gals all have fun together. xo Diana

  6. How great to meet some new friends. I have had friends for years and I always think I want to move away from Illinois and to a warmer climate when we retire in 5 years but then I think about family and friends here and it makes me think I will be enduring winters for a long time!
Just cannot move away from long time friends that I have been blessed with. I am glad your new group was good and you could connect. Bravo for all these new adventures you are doing with life. You are going outside your comfort zone and that is so good. You rock girl.
    Hugs and Happy Weekend.

  7. I'm so glad you're getting to know your new-to-you city with friends you're meeting. And doing better health wise as well.

  8. Meeting new friends is a challenge. I had never heard of The Transition Network, so have had some interesting reading about their groups. Glad you are seeking out and meeting new friends.
I totally understand the dentist concerns.

  9. I know what you mean.. I've moved alot over the years and so "friends" come and go. They are there and you are close while living there, and then once you move away, it slowly peters out.. only keeping in touch with email or letters now and then. I miss having "real" as one gal said, friends that live in my town and to get together with and just chat and laugh! I've lived here now for 4-1/2 years, and the friends I have made have seemed to just kind of drop into my life, with me not really joining a group or seeking them out! It's pretty neat... one is through where I've worked part-time and we just clicked and have so much in common. I met another at the little shop where I put my paper crafts and we just clicked! And just met another lady my age at a store where we were shopping for crafty items.. we stood there and talked for an hour! and have since, gotten together a few times to share our crafting passions and just chat. It's pretty amazing and I feel very blessed and didn't even join any groups! Good for you for joining and meeting. I too enjoy friends close to my own age, so we have much more in common. Glad your knee is better too... Marilyn

  10. I've moved around a lot and know firsthand how difficult it is to make new friends. My hat is off to you for making yourself get out there. Good luck at PT and have a wonderful weekend, Laura.

  11. I think it sounds hard to make new friends after a move. I made one BFF at work and two dear friends I met in church groups, one group at church called Widow Friends and one in Women's Bible Study. Sharing interests is a good start. Best wishes to you.
