those little idiosyncrasies

Saturday, January 18, 2014

Do you love your little idiosyncrasies. You know, the little things that make you unique.

Maybe it is the way you, dress, or the way you think, or the way you behave in certain situations.

I know that I certainly have mine.

I love wearing long skirts. When everyone else shows up in their jeans, I will often have on my long skirt and big dangly earrings.

I am a very free and independent thinker. I don't like following the norm and I don't have a problem expressing my thoughts about a subject.

I look around and see most women with straight, neat hair. There was a time when I straightened my hair to fit in. Now I just let my curly hair do its own thing.

I am a bit temperamental and get my feelings hurt easily. I love to help people, but I don't like being taken advantage of.

These are a few of my idiosyncrasies. They are what make me.....well.....me.

The older I have gotten, the more I have learned to embrace and love these things about myself. While they don't necessarily always serve me well, they are who I am, and I have mostly learned to be unapologetic about them. As long as I am not hurting anyone else with them then I think they are just fine.

I have learned that it is really hard to respect other people's uniqueness when we don't respect our own.

Are you loving your own idiosyncrasies?

  1. Exactly...I've learned to embrace both my curly hair, and my quirks...lol. This way, everyone is happier...including my hair. It seems that just recently I am starting to grow into myself...and sometimes I think back and wonder why I didn't know then what I know now...and I realize it's because with growing older, comes more life experience, and wisdom...I like wisdom, lol.

    Great post Laura.

  3. Your cute looks and curls suit you. I like to see someone with 'style'! I've felt in the past that I haven't found mine but this is my year to define my own unique style. Most of the time I'm smiling and feeling good about myself though. Of course....you and I are sensitive and can get our feelings hurt. It's just part of what makes us sensitive .....and that's a good thing! Sweet hugs!

  5. I love your curls, Laura, and wished for some all my life. I stopped taking estrogen last year and guess what? I have some curl in this stick straight hair of mine. My hairdresser says she has seen it before. Hormone changes do it. I'll take it! I know that for me, I am definitely more comfortable in my own skin than I've ever been. I love the perks of hitting 50. Acceptance of a lot of things came with 50. All good!

  6. I love your post my friend! You are so right, I too embrace my own quirks, as you say it elegantly! I also paint my toenails and have pedicures done and than I wear sandals, lol! I also love high heels when my friends are saying they can't walk in them! I also wear big hoop earings too. I have wavy hair which I manage quite well, or use electric curlers and that's it. I'm happy with myself and my 61 years, age doesn't bother me at all!
Hugs and thanks for your sweet visit.

  8. I am learning this too. It's taken me a year of therapy every week to get here, but I am! I'm a PK and have lived my life for everyone else. After my parents died 3 years ago, people still tried to make me fit that mold. I had a breakdown. It turned out to be the best thing that has happened to me. I'm making decisions based on what I feel is right for me and I no longer apologize for me. I'm beginning to like myself, overweight as I may be, I can still smile at myself, put on some lipstick and eyeliner and feel great! You go, girl! BTW, I love your girls! Wish I had some, but then again, I'm trying to be happy with who I am:)

  9. I'm laughing because I have such straight hair and for so many years I had perms to get curls! Now I just love being me, my natural self. Great post!

  11. Most days you are just breezing along feeling pretty confident about the choices you’ve made. Then whammo, someone does or says something that makes you pause and regroup. It’s a work in progress. I love your hair!

  12. I do find the older I get, the less I care about what others think. I am glad to be who I am.
