FINDING HAPPINESS

Happiness means many things to many different people.

What is happiness?

"Happiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment."

Although it means different things to different people it is widely agreed that it is 'subjective well-being'.

I think that what this means is that if you were to put your emotions on a scale, the positive feelings would outweigh the negative ones.

Contentment is a large factor in happiness. It occurs when we feel satisfaction in our own skin and in our surroundings.

Finding Happiness

It took me a long time to realize that I might just be looking for happiness in the wrong places.

For much of my life when something good happened I couldn't enjoy it because I was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It seemed like an endless cycle of self-fulfilling prophecy.

I realized I needed to not only look for happiness, but that I also needed to acknowledge it.

Life is made up of good and bad moments, but if we take the time to focus on the good moments we will increase our happiness.

Some of the things we can do to find happiness are:

  • Spend time with people we love and who love us.
  • Do things we love.
  • Imagine how wonderful life can be.
  • Focus on the positive instead of the negative.
  • Accept the good things in our lives.

Accepting Happiness

Acceptance is the key to happiness.

When we realize that the past can't be changed and instead focus on the joys of the now and the future then we are able to accept happiness.

We are all worthy of love and happiness and there is an unlimited supply of both.

Our happiness does not diminish the happiness of anyone else and vice versa.

be happy for this moment quote

Allow yourself to feel happiness.

Enjoy the little moments that make you happy.

Surround yourself with people and things that bring you joy.

Laugh with abandonment.

  4. "...if you were to put your emotions on a scale, the positive feelings would outweigh the negative ones." I love this line. It totally makes you evaluate your feelings, and assign some weight to each. I always think of this line from a TV series I loved: "Happiness doesn't necessarily mean the absence of sadness." My husband and I had a very sad week - lost a dear friend. Yet, as sad as I am, I have to remind myself not to feel guilty about other things in my life that do make me feel happy right now.
