CREATING A LIBRARY SPACE IN YOUR MAXIMALIST HOME

Monday, April 19, 2021

When I think of a home library I conjure up images of stately old homes, comfortable leather chairs next to a crackling fire, and rolling ladders stretching up the side of floor to ceiling bookcases.

Libraries can of course be just that, but almost any home can support some type of library space.

A library can be a room divider.

It can line the wall of a staircase.

You can even have your own library rolling carousel.

Every decor style is suitable for a home library.

Even if space is at a premium a library wall can be tucked behind a sofa.

Do you have a library in your home?

You can start your collection for your library with a beautiful coffee table book of home libraries (HERE)

  1. I DO! I turned my dining room into a library and I love it! I have a round table with 2 leather chairs there and bookcases filled with books. One of the best things I've ever done. We have a nice area for a kitchen table and chairs between the kitchen and lanai. I have lots of pics like these in pinterest!

  2. I like the ones behind couches or in the center of the room acting as a divider.

  4. I recently read a fiction book where the main character describes the home (castle) owner's library. I pictured in my mind that it must surely be like your first picture. I have never seen a bookcase as a room divider, but that is charming. I have several book shelves throughout and love them all. In my childhood home, we had a bookcase that had been handmade by my father when he returned from the Korean War and attended carpentry school on the GI Bill. As a gift to all 7 of his children, he had bookcases made for each of us from wood cut from the property. We all treasure these bookshelves. He wrote on the back of the bookcase so each one is labeled by his writing with date and where the wood was from. Thanks for sharing these unique book storage ideas.

  5. Oh I would love to have a library like that! But alas all I have is too small book cases in one of our guest rooms and it holds a lot of books. Problem is, I keep buying more..LOL... That looks like a good book you recommended. I'm going to go check it out.

  6. Hundreds of books here. When we rented our first house in Camps Bay - I counted the books on one wall of our livingroom for the inventory - rental agent didn't believe me!
