HOUSEPLANTS IN WINTER

Monday, January 6, 2020

At one time I lived in the desert in California. It was hot and it was dry.

I'm here to tell you that the desert had nothing on the apartment in winter where I am living now.

I never turn on the heat in my apartment. Believe me I don't need to. My apartment stays between 78 and 80 degrees without heat. If I didn't run my ceiling fan in the bedroom and crack the window in my living room I would roast.

My houseplants are also roasting and I have lost some of them. That does not make me happy. I love my houseplants and have invested too much in them to watch them suffer and die.

There isn't much more I can do about the heat, but I am trying to combat the dryness. I purchased two cool mist humidifiers, one for the bedroom and one for the living room area.

I also use an essential oil diffuser in the dining area, which puts out some cool mist. Also, the smell of Eucalyptus helps me to breathe, which is calming.

I've started watering more than I normally do and hope that will keep them from being so thirsty.

I purchased these two small plants at Aldi last week. They were only $2.99 each and I wanted to replace a couple that I lost. Hopefully, I can keep them happy, because right now they are making me happy.

Do you have houseplants? How do you keep them alive in winter?

  1. I have never been very good with houseplants. Right now I have fake succulents in several pots so they always look healthy!! LOL! I am wondering if you could run your air conditioner to cool off your apartment. You shouldn't have to be so overheated all of the time.

    1. Unfortunately my heat and air conditioning are controlled be the apartment building. It has to reach over 64 degrees outside for the air conditioning to come on. At least I can turn the heat off, but I guess I get heat from the rest of the building.

  2. I live in Sparks Nevada on the 3rd floor of my apartment building. I also RARELY ever run my heat and my apartment temperature is usually around 76 and never drops below 72. Yesterday I ran my A/C for a while just to cool down. I use my ceiling fan both in the living room and the bedroom and that does a pretty good job of keeping it comfortable in here. I have two cats who liked playing in the plants soil and making messes, often knocking them over, so now I don't have them anymore, gave them to friends and family. I also had a tendency to over water or underwater them, I am not very good with inside plants.

    1. Most people do tend to over water indoor plants. They take a lot of work, but as I don't have a pet I guess they are my plants.

  3. I know how important your houseplants are to you. Hopefully the humidifiers help.

    1. I hope they work too. At least my skin seems to be a little less dry.

  4. Oh no about your plants. I have one plant that I am so excited that I have kept going for over a year now. I am not great with houseplants. Could you cool off your apartment by putting your air conditioner on maybe when you get the most sun and heat during the day. Just to help cool things down. Then shut it off when things cool down or keep it at a steady temp. While the rest of us need heat you might just need to use your air conditioner more. Hope you can keep things going with your plants. I know how much you love them.
    Hugs,
    Kris

    1. Thank you. Unfortunately I can't control switching it to a/c.

  5. I was going to suggest cool air humidifiers, but you've already done that. My plants are very happy with that. Why is your apartment so hot? Have you asked the management? Is it cold outside? So strange. But you know ceiling fans can also dry the soil out I imagine.

    1. I had one in the bedroom and added one to the living room. I guess a lot of the old people that live here are cold and like it to be hot. I love hot weather outside, but definitely not inside.

  6. I've always loved houseplants but don't have many now. We have so many plants that survive all winter here in Florida so I enjoy them! Love those pretty small plants you found. Hugs!

  7. Your plants look great. I have two peace lily plants and that seems to be all I can keep alive!

    1. Peace lilies are pretty and easy to care for. That's works for me.
