WEIGHT HARD TO LOSE BUT EASY TO GAIN

Friday, January 3, 2020

Is it a riddle or a fact of life? What is hard to lose , but easy to gain? Well, for me it is definitely weight.

I worked hard this past year to lose weight and get healthier. It took me seven months to lose seven pounds. Over Christmas it took me two weeks to gain back six of those pounds.

So instead of needing to lose ten pounds I now need to lose sixteen. SIGH!!!

My doctor told me that at my age I need to eat 1200 calories a day to lose weight. If I eat less my body goes into starvation mode and slows my metabolism down. If I eat more...well we all know what happens then.

Up until Christmas I was counting calories, but let's face it, like most people I wanted to enjoy the holidays. Apparently I did a bit too much enjoying.

Now it is time to pay the piper. Less carbs and no desserts will be my future.

My knee has been gradually improving and so I plan to start back into exercising this week. I will start out with riding the stationary bike and water aerobics as they are supposed to be easy on my knee.

I have found that if I do too much the pain flares up. Vacuuming definitely doesn't agree with it. Do you think anyone will notice if I never vacuum again?

Let me know if you love to vacuum. You will always be welcome at my home and I have a rice cake here with your name on it.

  1. Sweeping with a broom or cleaning with the wet or dry Swiffer for longer than about 2 minutes somehow really makes my newest knee surgery knee really sore for two or more days after. It must have to do with shifting of weight somehow. My husband will occasionally take care of the sweeping, but a lot of times I let the floors go until they are just ridiculously bad. I have thought about getting a roomba or something similar but we don't have an electrical outlet available for one. Plus I don't know how it would be with my little 16 year old deaf Pomeranian. I saw on a news story about how a little long haired dog had managed to get its hair caught up in the robo vacuum and the owner had a very hard time getting the dog free from the vacuum. Something like that would scare Fuzzy so badly.

  2. I know that vacuuming is one of the hardest things on knees. Maybe after awhile your newest knee will be able to handle it better. Mine were eventually okay with it after my surgeries, but the sprain was definitely a setback.

  3. I get bloated more than anything after the holidays. I load my body with water to flush my system out. That's usually my weight gain. I don't normally eat refined sugar except holiday time.

    1. I don't normally eat refined sugar either, but the holidays are an exception.

  4. Laura, No honey, it's not me...I hate to dust and vacuum. I do enough to keep the house presentable. I do not deep clean like I used to...you know like taking my curtains and washing the walls while they are being washed and dried. Cleaning cabinets and such. Although I am a clean as you go kind of cook. I hate a messy kitchen and wash up things as I use them. I used to clean house whenever I was mad....I try not to get that mad any more. LOL
I gain 40 pounds once I retired and have never lost more than 5 pounds of it. I try to just maintain now. Blessings to you, do not hurt your knee. xoxo, Susie

    1. I don't do much of the really deep cleaning wither, but I don't like my home to be messy. I will be glad when things are back to normal.

  5. Well...I don't like to vacuum AND I threw my rice cakes away this week. I had hoped to eat them with a spoon of peanut butter on top but I didn't like the taste and it didn't satisfy my hunger at all (for a mid afternoon snack). I still do better eating some nuts. It's hard to even stay at the same weight when I am very active and watch what I eat....forget about losing weight! I want to be healthy and feel strong so I'm going to have to be ok with my weight . Snacks are my downfall...they are all so high calorie! Wishing you good health this new year! Hugs!

    1. I was just hoping to fob off the non existent rice cakes in my house. Snacks are my downfall too. SIGH!!

  6. Ugh rice cakes! I hate them. You probably do too. Since I don't do much around the holidays I didn't have all those goodies to eat, and last week when I saw my doctor I'd actually lost a few!

    1. Rice cakes have never entered my house. I think they are like eating paper. I was at the gym this morning riding the stationary bike.

  7. I can relate to this. I was on a 2 month no sugar, gluten free and clean eating and lost 15lbs over he 2 months which is a miracle for me. I have not metabolism with no hormones and thyroid disease so losing weight is always a struggle. So the clean eating paid off but since the holidays the last few weeks I have gained back 10 of the 15 I lost. The weight went right back on when I was eating rich and heavy foods and sugar. So next week it is back to detoxing the sugar out and feeling better. I found that my joints did not hurt at all the two months I was off sugar and now I can hardly walk with my knees again. So now I do believe when they say it is sugar that makes inflammation in your body get worse. Hoping I can get through the first few weeks of detoxing off sugar and then get back to what I was doing. I hope you can find a good way to lose weight too.
    Hugs,
    Kris

    1. Kris, I too have found that sugar REALLY is the culprit with fibro and thyroid disease! I tried the no grain eating last year but still hurt. A couple of weeks ago I went a week without one smiggeon of sugar! and boy did I feel good! And knowing that? you'd think I'd stay away from sugar, but nope, as soon as hubby made "me" (him) some gluten free choc. chip cookies, I was right back at it. Now I hurt again.. so trying to go off of it again.. also staying alway from even gluten free flours helps too, so trying my hand again at only almond and coconut flour to make anything that remotely seems like bread (and no sugar in it!). It's so hard and like Laura said... so hard to lose it and so easy to gain it! Marilyn

    2. Sugar is soooo bad for inflammation. I normally don't eat it at all. I envy you losing 15 pounds. Sorry that you gained it back, but at least you know that you can take it off. My body just doesn't seem to want to let it go.

  8. Yes Laura you're so right! Even at this older age, practically starving myself doesn't help, and exercise doesn't help (but who does exercise anyway?). I used to use the Nordic Track, when in my mid to late 40's and it was great.. and danced (country line dancing) and lost 17 lbs. doing those two things, without changing my eat habits at all. So I guess exercise holds true.. but when you hurt everywhere and have a bum knee (I have one too) it's hard to find a way to MOVE and get some good aerobic exercise. Even using a treadmill my doc said is not the best thing for an injured knee. Humph. Marilyn

  10. So true! Weeks to lose and days to regain...story of my life! lol It is harder the older we get to take the weight off and keep it off. However, like you- I keep trying. xo Diana
