promise in the air

There's promise in the air. It's whispering to me. Teasing me as I peer through the window.

It's shooting out tendrils of new hope and calling my name.

The stark brown landscape is finding relief and sighs with impatience for more of the same.

Green leaves are shyly peaking out.

A pot shows off the brave chives it has sheltered from the winter cold.

Yes, the air is chilly, but the sun has boldly come out and the warm air can't be far behind.

Welcome back spring.

are you living your dream

Are you living your dream? Do you wake up each day and say this is it, this is where I am supposed to be? Do you stop in the middle of the day and think I love this moment?

Or, are you questioning this moment in your life?

As women, we often try to live up to the expectations of others. There seem to be so many "shoulds" in our lives.

I have been talking to several women in my age range recently and realize that there are many of us who are feeling frustrated by life's circumstances. We are divorced or widowed. We were stay at home moms for much of our adult lives and have been left without the means to support ourselves adequately.

We were caught between a generation of older women who primarily stayed at home and were provided for, and a generation of younger women who were taught to value and take care of themselves.

We were the young women who were metaphorically or actually burning our bras, while at the same time our parents were encouraging us to go to college and find a husband to support us.

We are women who still feel that we have a lot to contribute, and yet we are unable to find jobs in a poor economy and in an atmosphere of revering younger workers.

We are happy with who we are, but we are unhappy with our circumstances.

So do you believe that you should go out and look for your life's purpose, or do you think you should stop, love the moment you are living in and let that purpose come to you?

What do you think?

mama told me not to lie

I don't know about you, but the worst thing I could do as a child was lie.

Well, apparently someone didn't get that message, and now he is facing his day of reckoning.

Yes, my friends, it is Punxsutawney Phil, and I say it is not a moment too soon.

An Ohio attorney is "lightheartedly" suing him for being a no good lying varmint for predicting there would not be six more weeks of winter weather.

It seems Phil is already working up his defense.

I'm not buying that nonsense and I'm ready to offer myself up as a witness.

Wait, I'm not allowed to travel until mid April and by then all of this will be forgotten and I will be digging in the garden.

I was so looking forward to my moment of glory.

is this a joke

Is this Mother Nature's idea of a joke?

I mean, I can take a joke along with the best of them.

But I am not finding myself to be amused.

It is not tickling my funny bone.

So here is what I have to say!!!

because I know that Mother Nature is going to have to give up her hold on winter at some point and then we will have the last laugh.

I am not running my You Inspire Me Monday feature this week or next. I have been a little under the weather this weekend and I have guests coming for Easter weekend, so it will return in two weeks.

sweet little carrier

I found this sweet little carrier at a recent auction and for $1.00 it was mine.

Someone had lovingly stained it and hand painted roses on it, but it just wasn't my style.

So after a quick apology to the unknown artist, I painted it white and did a little distressing.

But, I wanted more, so I added some burlap and a vintage button.

When the weather warms up, I may use it to hold some flowers on the porch, but for now I think I will fill it with my Nancy Drew books and put it on the table by my bed.  I'll be sure and share that with you later.

This is my favorite thing this week and I am sharing it with

cover me up

Do you have furniture that is crying for you to cover it up?

How do you feel about slipcovers?

I personally love them and when I move to Atlanta and have to furnish an apartment from scratch, I will be doing so with furniture from auctions, thrift store, and yard sales.

So I guess I am going to have to learn how to make some slipcovers.

Fortunately there are lots of good tutorials online and I have been known to even be able to follow directions occasionally.

I love all of the different options.

Old chenille bedspreads make great covers and I already have some in my stash.

Matelasse bedspreads give a wonderful texture

How about a cute ottoman covered in ticking. Blue and white happens to be my personal favorite, but this red is pretty cute.

Draping an antique quilt over a chair or sofa is a great look and doesn't require any sewing.

I'm thinking this may be a bit too ruffly for me, but it sure is romantic looking.

and then there is the ever wonderful drop cloth. I love its inexpensive price.

I am loving all of the options.

If you love slipcovers, check out my slipcover board on Pinterest. I'll be adding lots more photos as I find new inspiration.

So, I trundle down the stairs early this morning expecting my mom to say happy first day of spring.

Instead, I am greeted with. "You go to yard sales, auctions, and thrift stores, how come you can't do this?"

What did I miss?

Well, apparently what I missed was this.

A man bought this bowl for $3 at a tag sale in New York and set it on his coffee table for a few years. Turns out is was a 1000 year old bowl from the Northern Song Dynasty and it sold at auction for more than $2.22 million.

In my defense, I make it a point not to buy anything that is Made in China.

Seriously, what kind of defense is that?

Happy first day of spring.

inching forward

Do you ever feel like you are looking down the road and you see your goals and you know they are out there, but there are so many things telling you

There are so many obstacles in your path and they just keep cropping up.

How will I overcome these you ask yourself.

You look at all of the things that have to happen and the big picture just seems overwhelming. You are just trying to carry too much.

This is how I have been feeling. My mom has decided once again not to move, even though she will not have the family support system here. I have so much that has to be dealt with before I am able to move to Atlanta. Need a part time job. Need to find health care there. I have virtually no furniture, or kitchen ware, or any of the essentials for setting up a home, since everything I owned was stolen. Oh and that brings me to having to find an apartment and.....................

I lie awake at night and feel completely overwhelmed and then I remember

and even though I may not feel closer, I am going to make a list of all of my obstacles and figure out how to tackle them one at a time. I am going to do the most stressful thing for me, which is look into filing a suit against the woman who stole my property in North Carolina. I will be able to travel next month so I can go down there and to Atlanta to start on my list.

I am going to work hard to

I know it isn't going to be easy, but I am grateful to have all of you standing beside me. It sure makes me feel like I can accomplish it all.

You Inspire Me Monday and a Winner

Have you met Susan and Bentley of Ash Tree Cottage?

This is Bentley. How adorable is that face.

Susan is an interior designer whose own personal style is cottage and I do love her personal style.

There are florals.

Vintage  kitchen linens

a cute cottage dollhouse

a peak at the refinished hutch in her studio

and glimpses of her favorite things

I know many of you may already follow Ash Tree Cottage, but if you don't I hope you will go over and pay a visit. You will always feel welcome.

We have a winner of the Shabby Apple giveaway. I want to thank everyone who entered. This has been a fun giveaway. I picked the winner the old fashioned way. I dropped all of the entries in a hat and my 88 year old mom drew the winner. (Don't worry there was no cheating. When I tried to stir them up she smacked my hand away and told me not to touch them. Some things never change. SIGH!!!)

The winner is:

Wow What are These?

Yesterday my seven year old granddaughter called me to tell me they were going to the Botanical Gardens in Atlanta.

Our conversation:
Me: I've never been there.
Sid: You've never been to the Botanical Gardens? Really??
Me: Well, you know, I couldn't really walk around too good, but now when I come down I can.
Sid: Without your cane?
Me: Yep!!
Sid: Good job, Nana.

When did she become the adult.

Being surrounded by all of these heavenly flowers sounds wonderful to me.

and something tells me Sid and JH were probably up to some kind of mischief.

but the best part of all would be seeing all of these wonderful flowers for the very first time, and being a little flower yourself.

What are these and where did they come from Mama?

Thanks to my youngest daughter, Katy (also know as Aunt Katy) for sharing their day with me through her photos.

The Shabby Apple $50 gift certificate giveaway is still going on through Sunday night on my blog. Click here to enter.
