In the eight years that I have been living here, other than going to Macy's once or twice a year, I think I have walked through the mall twice. 

That has now changed. 

I love to walk, but after my knee injury I knew I couldn't walk my hilly neighborhood. My knee would start aching and swelling when I did. 

However, I was gaining weight and feeling tired. I knew I had to find a way to start walking again, so I went to the mall. 

At first it was tiring to walk around the entire mall, which is over a mile, and my walking sandals didn't have enough cushion for walking on concrete. 

Once I switched to tennis shoes and walked on an almost daily basis though, I found the walking was becoming a lot easier. 

I am now up to two miles on the days that I walk. I am feeling better, plus I have fun seeing what is in the shop windows as I walk, and engaging in one of my favorite activities, which is people watching. 

The mall is just a five minute drive away so it is also convenient. 

I know that walking isn't enough, so this week I have started on my healthy eating plan and a couple of days a week I go and exercise somewhere else. 

I'll share those with you later. 

I am never tempted to detour to the Cheesecake Factory. That would require a twenty mile walk to work it off. 
I would love to start swimming, but I don't have access to a pool so that won't be happening at this point.

  1. I'm glad you are able to get your walking in. I like your idea of mall walking if going outside isn't feasible. These days I do a little stretching to keep from getting stiff, otherwise I think about it more than I do it. Perhaps getting into the Fall feeling will help me get started again.

  2. Walking and some jogging are what I usually do. Some yoga.... Nice to see that you are able to utilize your mall. A great place to walk in all types of weather.

  3. I love walking too. In the nicer months I love getting outdoors in the evening when it has cooled down and walk. The mall idea is fabulous since it is air conditioned too. I am having gel put in my knee at the end of the month and I am hoping that will allow me back into exercising again. I need to find a good plan too.

  4. I've thought about mall walking but mine is a bit far for me to go too. Good for you. I do need to do some type of exercise for sure.

  5. I wear a fitbit and try to hit my 10,000 steps each day....but it doesn't always happen, unfortunately!

  6. For the past 35 years, I have walked almost every day in my neighborhood. The only time I do not walk is when there is lightning or ice on the streets. Fortunately, that does not happen often. I feel so much better when I walk. Also, for the past 12 years, I have been going to the gym at least four times a week and usually five times a week. It really does make a difference in regards to health and fitness. You are fortunate to have a mall so conveniently located for walking - no sweating or insects.

  7. I'm not sporty. I do walk while on holidays. I practise yoga and as a former dancer, I do a "barre" every time I feel my body needs it.

  8. Walking in the mall is a great idea. I used to do it years ago when my back was really bad and I couldn't even walk on uneven ground.. and lived in the country so only gravel roads and uneven ground! The mall was great, although about 40 minutes away! today my back is better due to not working and driving 2 hours a day and sitting at a desk for hours on end... so I still walk outside if I can make myself.. I hate walking! I do lots of yard work, but that isn't walking and not the same. I do stretching now and then, but should do it at least every other day! I have a stairstepper bike thing (off brand) and use it now and then, but again, should do it more often! I'm not an exerciser, never have been, but I sure feel better when I do.. and at age 70.. need to keep moving and stretching. Hubby and I are going to join our gym which is only blocks from our house.. come Fall. We don't even have a mall within 45 miles of us.. so that's out. Take care.. Marilyn

  9. I am still rehabbing my knee...I use a pedal machine for 30-40 minutes most days, and use the stairs to strengthen the quad muscles. Good for you for working to get healthy!
