Wednesday I went to see the orthopedic surgeon about my knee swelling and pain.

I felt like I was doing pretty good that morning. My knee was swollen, but the pain was minimal and I walked from the parking lot and into the office with no problem.

Since it has been five years since my first knee replacement and over four years since the second he ordered x-rays for both.

The x-rays showed no change since the time they were done. That was a relief. The problem was that my knee definitely had fluid on it and he wasn't sure why. He ordered a blood test to check my sed rate, which will show if I have inflammation and possibly infection. Hopefully not.

He told me I could go on my walks if I felt like it and so Thursday. I took a thirty minute morning walk.

By Thursday night my knee was so swollen and in so much pain I could barely put enough weight on it to get to the bathroom.

I gave myself a lecture on slowing down. Yesterday I stayed in the bed and iced my knee and rested. Today it is doing better and I am up moving around the apartment with minimal pain.

I still think it is a sprain, but I know even sprains take time to heal. It is hard for me to slow down. There is so much I want and need to do, but I am going to continue resting it.

Next week I will tell you about my first experience with Instacart. We got it here a few weeks ago and the timing was perfect since I couldn't get out to go to the grocery.

Have a great weekend.

  1. Laura, I was glad you had no change in your knee. My sister never wants to stop walking but pushes herself and then it really hurts her back. So different from you, she has ostio. But I too the slowing down. I wish we could work and walk as much as we would love too. Please take care. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  2. Laura, I know how hard it is to rest and take it easy but the pain is telling you to do just that. My elbow pain is better but if I do too much, I'm back where I started. Fun to get older right? Hugs!

  3. Hi Laura,
Glad there was no changes in the xray of your knees. That is good news. Hope you can just rest it and it will begin to feel better. If there is not infection maybe he can put a steroid shot in the knee to reduce all the swelling and get you going again. Hoping it will feel better soon.
Have a good start to the new week.

  4. So glad the dr. said there is no changes in your knees. Just do you best to take it easy, I know it is easier said/thought than done, but do be careful.

Have you heard of Original Blue-Emu Super Strength cream? It works great for pain. You can get it at Walmart and other places. A friend told me about it when I was dealing with plantar fasciitis last summer. I have used it on my feet and other sore/strained muscles. Very good.

May you continue to feel less pain and be more mobile.

  5. So sorry to hear about your knee but glad no further damage inside. It is SO HARD to rest when we want to be up and about and doing things! Ice sure is our friend. I'm having a problem right now with my foot and it hates me when I try to walk very far! Very disgusting. Take care... Marilyn

  6. Keep the ice going, Laura... hope it heals quickly.

  7. Knee sprains are quite painful, and can really interfere with mobility. Glad the replacements were in good shape...xoxo

  8. Take it easy, I say with much experience!

  9. Glad to hear no further damage was noted. Rest and heal! Don't do too much!

  10. Laura, I'm so sorry that you're having trouble with your knee. This is the time of year we all want to be out and about and active, and it's so frustrating to be slowed down by a joint acting up. Glad to hear the x-rays were good. Hope the swelling diminishes and the knee stops giving you grief. xo
