Last week I wrote a post about how it seems that the harder I work these days the less traffic and income are coming into my blog. If you missed that post you can read it here.

What I have realized since I wrote that post is that it is up to me to drive more traffic to my businesses. I don't want to be any more invisible online than I do in person.

That means I am home schooling myself on all the ways to drive traffic to a blog. One of the most important things that I have found is that it is extremely important to make your blog Google friendly.

That brings us to SEO or Search Engine Optimization. I have heard a lot about SEO, but I just kind of blew it off. Now I have realized that it is important for me to learn what it is and how to use it.

Wikipedia describes SEO as "the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's "natural" or un-paid ("organic") search results

Okay, so just what does that mean to you and me. It means that when someone goes to a search engine like Google or Bing for example, and types in a search we want them to find us. We want a high ranking placement in search results.

There is a ton, and I do mean a ton, of information out there about SEO, and let me tell you that I didn't understand 99% of it. I felt like Linda Blair in the Exorcist. My head was spinning round and round.

I did find this posting about SEO basics that I like. It was kind of an SEO for Dummies. That would be me. It gave 8 essentials when optimizing your site and it compared my blog to a cake. I mean, who doesn't like cake.

Yes, they are both cakes, and I think my blog may be the cake on the left. I want it to be the cake on the right.

So now that I know what SEO is, I am going to work on how to utilize it, and of course I will share it all with you.

  1. Oh yes, I've read the articles about SEO also. I learned that instead of using some fun name for one of my soaps, it helps to tag and name them with simple terms that people would search for. Instead of calling it 'Heavenly Honeysuckle' in my title, I call it (boringly) 'Honeysuckle Soap, Natural, Vegan.' It seems very cumbersome, but I understand that no one out there is going to be looking for 'Heavenly Honeysuckle.' LOL So SEO really is important and useful. I don't always remember to be mindful of how important it is, but I'm learning and trying to be more careful.

  2. I know. I need to go back and retitle some blog posts. Now more cutsie titles. :)

  3. I realized a thing or two when l checked my records and saw that one post had 1000 visits and another 37! Thanks for sharing your finds, good luck and a happy weekend. Blessings, Pam xx
