WINTER HOUSEPLANT CARE

Saturday, January 14, 2017

I love my houseplants, and because I don't have a pet at the moment they are like my babies.

I want them to remain healthy, and that is not always easy in the winter.

So I have made a pretty tray that holds things I need and is easy to carry around. Scissors for trimming. A new watering can and mister that were Christmas gifts from my sweet granddaughter Sidney. A hand towel for drying my hands as needed.

One problem for houseplants in the winter is inadequate light. There are just too many gray gloomy days, and sometimes I feel like the color is just being leached out of my plants.

I do have a grow light that I can use if I feel like I am losing one of my precious plants, but of course I always prefer natural light, which is why I move my plants around to see where they do best.

Lack of water is also a problem along with dry air in the winter. My apartment is really dry. I feel like my skin is turning into sandpaper, so I know that my plants need more moisture. I am very diligent about watering my plants (make sure not to over water) and I love the new mister Sidney  gave me. I also have a humidifier to help add moisture to the air.

I also love cut flowers, so I do add them to my decor. Freesias work great for me because they don't seem to aggravate my allergies, and they are very inexpensive at Trader Joe's.

I don't know about you, but when I look around at all my beautiful plants winter just seems to recede into the background.

  1. I had lots of plants last winter. But it seems every time I have them, I somehow end up with gnats, which scare the pupsters half to death. So I gave them all to the apartment manager. Never happened before I moved here for some reason. At night I run an essential oil diffuser in my bedroom because Abi tends to cough at night, and it really helps her.

    1. I had gnats two years ago, but I got rid of them with a combination of hydrogen peroxide and water. I haven't had a problem since :)

    1. I have a double window in my living room and a window in my bedroom so it does make it more difficult. Linda. Would love to see a photo of your flowering plant.

  4. Your plants looks lovely. I spent part of yesterday moving some houseplants around so they get a little different light here than they do in the summer. Yours look healthy and well cared for...and, like you, they bring me a bit of joy during the cold winter months. xo Diana

  5. Laura you plants looks so healthy and pretty. I have never been a inside plant person but do a lot of plants in my gardens in the summer. Having that life growing inside while everything outside is dormant is beautiful. Enjoy.

    1. I have more inside plants now than I used to because I don't have an outside garden. I am hoping that this summer I can get one of the garden spaces here.

    1. Happy New Year, Katie. Houseplants do better with less water. It can be hard though to find just the right amount. I am always experimenting.
