LET'S GO WALKING

No doubt about the fact that this has been a really hot summer, and that translates into the fact that most days it was just too hot to get out and walk.

I love to walk, and when I don't walk on a regular basis I feel sluggish.

This morning the temperature was 55 degrees. Perfect for walking.

I put on my walking sandals and a light jacket and hit the pavement, and while I was walking I made a vow to myself to get back into a regular walking program.

I decided that I am going to take a no more excuses stance. I know that the weather isn't always perfect to walk outside, but I live five minutes from a large mall, and there is no reason why I can't go there and walk in inclement weather.

I am also going to find new places to walk. We have lots of parks and there is an arboretum very close to me so I can vary where I do my walking.

Fall seems like the perfect time to build my walking stamina back up. Cooler days and pretty trees will be calling my name.

How about you? Do you have an exercise plan? Is walking part of that plan? I would love for us to support each other in our efforts, with lots of encouragement.

I will keep you up to date on how I am doing and where I am walking.

  1. Good for you! I used to be so good about walking every single day but I can't get myself back into a routine - frustrating!

    1. It is frustrating. I kicked myself out of bed this morning and made myself go.

  2. Good for you! Walking is so good for our body, mind and spirit! Like you, I feel sluggish if I don't walk every few days. I try to go every other day or no more than 2 days but that is a challenge when the weather isn't nice. I don't live near a good place for walking when the weather isn't well suited, but I am going to try and do better about just dressing for it better. I also bought a reflective vest so i can go when it gets dark early.

    1. It is hard when the weather doesn't cooperate and I have found myself really slacking off in the summer and winter. We have a new senior center that is opening in a few days and I think they have a walking track. I will definitely be checking it out.

  3. It does feel so good to get outside and after you get into a good routine, you actually have more energy. I walk in the evenings and always see something interesting or at least get to say hello to neighbors. Wish we could walk together! Hugs!

  4. I am right there too Laura. I wish we lived closer to walk together. Now that the weather is so beautiful I am walking every day too. Feels good to breath in that fresh air too. You go girl!

  5. OH isn't it wonderful to have this nicer weather come through! I had to laugh...I remember one morning a few weeks ago, walking prior to dawn. It was so horrible and humid !! I was up by my son's house and someone was coming down the street...also walking in the dark trying to beat the heat but it was still as if we were in the tropics! As they got closer I realized it was my son and his dog Merle, and we both agreed that we were sweating and miserable and it was around 5 a.m.! The day just got worse after that :)

  7. You are an inspiration to me! I have to start up walking again! I hurt my knee about 7 weeks ago and that put a stop to walks and exercise, but it's better now so I need to start again! I've walked a little this last week as it's not as hot here either.. love the days that are cooler (well, if 90 degrees is "cooler")...... and I'm not a morning person, so my walks usually happen after dinner around dusk. I love that time of day anyway and love walking past peoples' yards and enjoying their flowers, etc. No mall here for winter walking, but sometimes I just bundle up and go anyway.. but wish we could have some sort of "encouragement network" among those of us who need to keep on walkin'!!! Fresh air does help so much for our minds, bodies and spirits. I've noticed since I hurt my knee and haven't been outside as much or "doing" anything physical, I've become somewhat depressed and sluggish. NOT a good thing! Keep on inspiring us! 1. Glad to hear that your knee is healing. I remember what it was like before I had my knee replacements. I couldn't walk at all and I missed it so much. I love getting outside and enjoying the fresh air. I agree that it does so much to lift the spirits and that is something I am needing right now. I am going to try and write once a week on my walking progress and and what I am doing to keep it interesting, etc. Would love for anyone else to join in.

  8. trying, each week, to walk once on the beach and once in the mountains.

Today we did the beach walk. Kind weather and company helps the motivation!

  9. For over 25 years, I have walked 2-1/2 miles every morning. Fortunately, I live in a subdivision where I am comfortable walking any time of the day/night. Before I retired, I walked at 4:15 a.m. every morning though after retirement, I now walk about 6:00 a.m. The only things that keep me from walking are ice and lightning. Even as early as I walk, I usually see a few neighbors who walk their dogs before work. This summer was difficult on the hot, muggy mornings but I am afraid if I stop, it will be so hard to get back in the routine. I also go to the gym five days a week. For me, walking and going to the gym are two items on my daily to-do list.

    1. Good for you, Shirley. I am sincerely impressed with your dedication. I think once we get in the routine it is harder to stop.
