The unceasing sounds of autumn. The rains pelt against my window panes, just to trickle down in unending patterns. An ambulance, which goes barely noticed in the summer suddenly brings a more mournful feel to the day. A train whistles far off in the distance, reminding me that life is passing far too quickly. Slow down, slow down the sounds are whispering.

The leaves cling to the trees as if they are reflecting my feelings of time. They too do not want the seasons of life to pass by so quickly. Let me stay they say. We can continue to give you shade this winter. But Mother Nature scolds the leaves. You are not needed in the winter. The trees need to rest and prepare for a new season of growth. As do we.

Fall often brings feelings of melancholy to my soul. Life is slowing down. There is a dying out in nature. So I stop and let myself feel the changes. I enjoy the feel of my hands wrapped around a warm cup of tea. The smell of muffins baking in the oven. The sounds of children laughing in the early morning air as they wait for the school bus outside my window.

It is all a part of the cycle of life, and I know that I must savor every moment.

  2. I usually feel melancholy in the Fall but so far this year, I'm feeling great! I love the shadows across the lawn in the afternoons and the cooler days! Hugs, Diane

    1. I think all of the rainy gray days have increased my sense of melancholy, but we had a beautiful sunny day today. Tomorrow I think we are back into another gray and rainy week. Hugs.

  3. Hi Laura....I feel melancholy in autumn, too, mainly because everything is dying and bleak winter is ahead. But for me the key is remaining in the moment, not looking ahead. Everything is so beautiful now----the leaves, the crisp, cool air, the crackling fire in the fireplace, the blue skies outside, the golden afternoon sun, etc.

We do have to savor each second since life, itself, is fleeting. Susan

    1. I am trying hard to remain in the moment too, Susan. Yesterday was our one sunny day. It was so nice to get out and just feel the warmth on my face. :)

  4. Yes this explains many feelings in fall very well...quite a mixture of them seem to occur

Here we had cold, wind and rain over the weekend. It's cleared up a bit but still so windy...I'd like a break and a bit milder weather / don't want cooped up yet :) I think the worst is anticipating less and less light as the days wear on towards winter.

    1. I have a definite problem with less light, too Deb. Not ready to be cooped up quite yet. :)

  5. I like your post a lot, Laura! Mostly, I love fall and consider it my favorite season and, yet, as I grow older, I admit I get a little more nostalgic and reflective and just a tiny bit melancholy as the leaves change. Your post captures this ambivalence so well!

    1. Thank you. I think it is a time where we tend to reflect more. Maybe that is a good thing. :)

  6. That is true, and savoring the moment is key. I'm going to try to do that with winter this year, rather than wishing it were over.

    1. I think I will, too although by mid January I start having problems with SAD. I'll have to get out the light therapy and pretend I am at the beach :)

  7. Right you are, Laura. Time for waffles, spiced peaches, moving warmer clothing to prime real estate in our wardrobe drawers ..... savoring all the lovely winter preparation rituals while slipping into shorts and sandals for just one more day.

    1. I've moved most of my clothes, but I have saved a few for some warm days we have ahead. As for the sandals they will be on my feet all winter on sunny days (in the house). I'm good at pretending. :)

  8. I love Fall but I live in Florida. Winter is the worst for me. I would not survive in the North because of the dreary Winter weather. People say that Florida doesn't have seasons, but we do in North and Central Florida. We even have leaf changes and bare limbs in Winter. Even though at 10 am this morning it was 80 degrees there are changes. Less humidity, trees and flowers changing and the daylight hours slowly subsiding. I tend to remain indoors in the last months of summer because of humidity. My favorite thing about living here is that there is always some green in nature. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. Debbie

    1. It has been very rainy here. I think it is going to be back up to 80 on Monday. A lot of the leaves seem to just be falling off without changing :(
