There is just something about summertime that brings back memories of a simpler time. There are so many sounds and smells. I wake up and hear the birds singing and the man across the street is getting an early start on mowing his lawn while the temperatures are still cool.
It's Saturday, one of my favorite days in summer because I can set out early for the yard sales. I always feel so excited about the treasures I might find, and I definitely was not disappointed today.
A beautiful rag rug
an antique gathering basket, and a vintage suitcase were my favorite finds.
I did see some other things that I loved, but they were priced way too high. We didn't have yard sales when I was growing up. I do remember white elephant sales where everyone would bring their castoffs and sell them for a local cause.
It is really going to be a beautiful day here in Kentucky. The clouds and rain have finally gone away and the temperatures are only going to be in the seventies. Perfect to open all my windows and let some fresh air in. I am not a huge fan of air conditioning, but I know that in a few days it will be back up near ninety and I'll have to run it. I remember when I was a child and there was no A/C. We would take our dolls or paper dolls and sit under a tree on a blanket to get out of the heat. I can't seem to tolerate the heat the way I did then. I guess we have gotten spoiled with being able to flip a switch and have it be cool.
So today I am just going to enjoy some simple summertime pleasures. Fresh squeezed lemonade. A good book. Children laughing as they head for the pool or ride their bikes.
What are your plans today?

enjoy your beautiful day. hot and humid here in texas. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you. I think your hot and humid weather is heading our way :)
DeleteIt's been raining, cloudy, foggy and drizzly here today and the temperature is 20C or about 70F which is comfortable on a sunny day but it feels very damp today. Our deck isn't finished so I can't sit out there so I'm at the dining table checking up on blogs. I baked chocolate chip cookies this morning and am making chicken noodle soup in a while for supper. It's that kind of day. Rather lazy. ;) Enjoy your day and your beautiful flowers. Pam
ReplyDeleteIt' s amazing how different 70F can feel depending on if the sun is out. Seems like a lazy sort of day to me :)
Deleteyou found some real treasures at the yard sales!!! I have not saw a rug like that in years!! Enjoy your lovely saturday, we are having a quiet day too,
ReplyDeleteWasn't that rug a great find. I was excited to see it, Laurie. Enjoy your quiet day. :)
DeleteHappy Saturday Laura! I've already hit the flea market and a couple of garage sales. My real find today was a beautiful pink Schwinn tricycle for Laynee for her third birthday. She will love it because it is pink!
ReplyDeleteJudy
Judy, a pink Schwinn tricycle sounds adorable. I'm sure Laynee will love it.
DeleteSummer is my favorite season! It seems like things are less structured and I love it! Happy weekend my friend!
ReplyDeleteI hope you are having a wonderful weekend, Diane.
DeleteI am right there with you!!! It's been nice here in Texas today as well! 90's for sure but it is usually triple digits by now so this is great!! I heard my first locust of the season this afternoon. This is the LATEST ever I have heard them! The sound will soon be annoying but my oldest daughter and I have a running contest every year as to who hears the first one! I have won the last three years!!
ReplyDeleteI guess the winter delayed the locusts like everything else. I love hearing them. It means it's definitely summer. :)
DeleteI worked in the kitchen. I'm really tired now!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Can't wait to see what you've done, Brenda. Rest up :)
DeleteLooks like you had a good day. We grew up with no AC either and I would go down to my Aunt's house and we would play in her cellar where it was cool and dry. I loved it. Hope you have a great Sunday- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI can remember going down in the cellar of my friend's house, Diana. Her mom had an old wringer washing machine, which I was fascinated with. I always had visions of someone getting their arm chopped off. LOL
DeleteHope you have a great Sunday, too.
Lovely simple pleasures, limonade and a good book. We went to a birthday party by the sea, warm sunny evening with a pleasant breeze. Pam xx
ReplyDeleteThat sounds wonderful, Pam. I would love to be by the sea.
DeleteEven though it will not be officially summer until next Saturday, if yesterday was a harbinger, it would be perfectly fine with me. Long, lazy and in the eighties with a breeze. A book, peach tea and silence ........
ReplyDeleteYour day sounds perfect, Lynn.
DeleteSounds like a wonderful summer Saturday Laura:) I like you rag tag and basket! Have fun:) xxleslie
ReplyDeleteI hope you have had a great weekend, Leslie :)
DeleteOh Laura what a great summer week end you are having. I too love to have the windows open and hear the birds singing instead of the alarm clock. The sound of grass being mowed and the smell of fresh cut grass is one of my favorite things of summer. Thank you for sharing your beautiful day.
ReplyDeleteKris
The simple things of summer really are the best, Kris. :)
DeleteSuch nice vintage items! And I do think we've become spoiled by AC. I still remember playing, just as you said, on a blanket outdoors, and all summer long, when we would hear, 'Don't slam the screen door' as we ran outdoors to play with friends. :-)
ReplyDeleteI remember that screen door thing too. It slammed anyway, because we were always in such a hurry to get outside.
DeleteI admit that I did enjoy the cool temps here in Kentucky this past week. We are headed for some hot summer days, this week. Do stay cool!
