and now I'm over it

I always love the first real snowfall.

You wake up in the morning and there is a pretty blanket clinging to the trees.

Even the Magnolias don't seem overly surprised at their new white coats.

Yes, the trees seem perfectly okay with a snowy blanket.

And yesterday as I drove to Shaker Village for a Thanksgiving dinner, the icicles clinging to the cliffs were beautiful. I wish I could have taken photos, but there was no where to stop on the two lane winding road.

When we arrived, there were still patches of snow, which added a feeling of authenticity to the subdued historical surroundings.

The first snowfall of the season always seems so wonderful. I can't wait to get out there and take pictures. To feel the crunch of the snow beneath my boots.

Then when we get back from our lovely dinner the reality sets in. This is my car, which is parked outside. It is covered in a layer of snow and ice. The doors are frozen shut. The scraper is inside the car.

An old song pops into my head "Baby it's Cold Outside", and I realize I am so over it. There are months of this cold and snow ahead. Old Man Winter has raised his head too soon.

That's when I went inside, made some hot chocolate, and closed the blinds. Time to look at some gardening books.

  1. Ah yes, the reality...snow covered vehicle, and scrapper inside...been there, done that, too many times. And can you believe that we don't park inside the garage? Silly us.

  2. I lived in New England for the first 52 years of my life. Grew up in Vermont (brrrrrr) and lived 25 years in Boston (another brrrr with wind) and I don't care if I ever see snow or feel cold again! We now live in Lake Havasu, AZ, where it reaches 120 in the summer and gets down in the 40's overnight in the winter and that's plenty cold enough for me. And the snow only reaches the mountaintops -- and that's where it should stay!

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving in spite of the snow.

  5. I've heard it is a hassle to live in snow throughout the winter, but it sure is pretty! I'm hoping for some this year. We never have a lot and it doesn't last more than a few days. So, we really enjoy it when it snows here. Loved that photo of the historical building with the Christmas greenery in front of it.

  8. Oh dear. I hear you. I love snow up until Dec. 31 then that's it. We get 4 good months of it here. The Shaker Village looks pretty with the snow around. Is that the one in Kentucky? We visited it many years ago. Have a good weekend. P.S. We don't have snow here yet.

  9. And of course the ice scraper was inside the car! Murphy's Law!
Shaker Village looks like a lovely place for a Thanksgiving Dinner -- love that picket fence and the lights along the path :)

  11. I suppose l am a little weird, but l love snow and cold days :-). By march l can say l have had enough though and want spring. I don't have a garage so digging the car out can get tiresome after a while. My old car is very large too, so l have to take out a stool to stand on ;-). What l don't like is ice rain and we have had so much of it in November. That is scary! Happy weekend, Pam xx

  15. Oh, Laura ... I love a new blanket of snow, but I'm so glad I live in Southeast Texas, where such sightings are rare. Snow is beautiful, but it does pose so many problems. Here's wishing you warmer weather.

  16. Our 3 or 4 inches started melting. And this morning in the bright harsh sunlight I see all the floors that need mopped from dog prints and company tracking the mess in yesterday.

    Suddenly I share your feeling ! :)
