finding your way

source

This has been a difficult week moving my mom into a retirement apartment. She had been resistant for awhile, but when she decided to do it she wanted it done very quickly. My older sister is not happy about it and so refused to help with the move. That left it all on me, but it has been a special time for Mom and me.

I learned something interesting about my mom this week. She has always been very outgoing and has tons of friends, but she was nervous about meeting new people and wanted me to eat the first couple of meals with her in the dining room. Fine by me, the food was delicious.

Last night she ate on her own and I was hoping that everything went okay. It was more than okay. She called me to say how happy she is and I am ecstatic. She has already made several new friends and she loves her cute apartment. Today we are going to try and finish the unpacking and go to the grocery to get her breakfast food, as she wants to eat that meal in her apartment. This weekend we will try and get her pictures hung and then I know she can really start calling it home.

After that I can focus on my own moving ahead. One day at a time and one step at a time. I know it will not be easy, but I will find a way to accomplish it all and a way will find me.

  1. It is always hard to take this step, I am not sure if I can do it. I hope you both are happy!

  2. Ahhhhh! My hat is off to you! Glad it's a special time for you and your Mom! But sorry that your sister wouldn't be part of it! Her loss! My Mom is 83 and living on her own and alone. I worry day in and day out. She's in Florida and I'm in Ga. My day will come to soon. Wish I could bring her up here so I can check on her -- but she's too active and too many friends.

  3. Welcome back, Laura. You were missed. Glad it went well with your mom. I moved my dad into a retirement place about 4 mos. ago. It was dropping him off for his first day of school. I'll keep you in my prayers that all goes well and the court case comes out your way!

  8. Hugs to you, sweet Laura. I know it can't have been easy for you, but how wonderful that your mom has opened her heart and accepted her new normal. You're a great daughter and I hope your sister will come around and support this decision ... and also apologize for not being there for you both.

  9. Laura I am so glad you Mom is happy! Such a difficult thing to do. My Mom is considering moving to Ga again and I am praying she will. I miss her very much and Texas is just so far away. Now you can think about your move!

  11. Laura, I wish you and your mother great luck and happiness. Please do not let this come between you and your sister...your mom will let her she's okay in her new place. Some times families won't agree about the parents. But if your mom is happy...what more could you want for her. xoxo,Susie

  13. So glad your mom likes her new place. When my mom moved into the "high rise" (housing/assisted living for the elderly), she told me her only regret was that she hadn't done it 5 years earlier, because it was nice having friends to visit every day.
